Dance | Hailey Gelzheiser
Hailey Gelzheiser is a dance educator and choreographer who has been bringing her love of movement to students at SMARTS since 2017. During her time at SMARTS, she has served as a Community Teaching Artist and as a dance educator for the SMARTS Empowers program. She graduated in 2019 from Youngstown State University with a B.A. in Dance Management, receiving an extensive education not only in dance technique and choreography, but also dance pedagogy. Along with teaching at SMARTS, Hailey is also the Artistic Director of the JCC School of Dance, an instructor at The Dancing School, and a choreographer for the Moon High School dance team. Dance is her passion, and she feels so lucky to be able to bring the joy of movement to her students every day.
Hailey says, "Tap dance is a percussive style of dance that uses the feet to create rhythms and sounds. Tap dance requires special shoes that have metal on the bottom. The metal on the bottom of the shoes are called taps. There are toe taps and heel taps on each shoe, and those two taps are what the dancers use create rhythms and sounds that you hear. What makes tap dance so special is that it combines elements of both African dance and Irish dance, making it a unique dance form with a lot of history! During this experience today, I will show off some tap steps to classic jazz music. Sit back, relax, and enjoy the American art form of tap dance!"
